Learning baile flamenco in New York

Bailaora Dionisa García will hold a flamenco dance workshop for beginners in New York City. Spread over four days, the workshop will take place in June 2021.

The Big Apple and The City that Never Sleeps are two of its endearing nicknames. Yet, flamenco has always been part of New York’s charm. This American city is famous for its skyscrapers and for the fact that people can find anything in it, so naturally flamenco could not be missing.

We know that the lively spirit of this art genre burst out of its Spanish boundaries long ago, and today it is practically a religion in places such as Japan and Mexico. Yet, it is also thriving in other parts, thanks to people like Dionisia García, a flamenco bailaora who settled in New York and founded Flamenco NYC.

For the month of June, she has started an introduction to flamenco workshop for absolute beginners. It is the perfect workshop to get started in this wonderful world. The lessons will be spread in four days — from June 2nd to June 23rd — and will have an approximate duration of one hour.

The goal is to allow people without any previous experience in baile flamenco to get acquainted with this art form, by teaching its basics aspects. Classes will focus on strong footwork, upper body coordination, understanding flamenco music and compás, proper posture and breathing.

«We will begin to develop the muscle strength and dance skills necessary for flamenco dance as we learn a new choreography. Regardless of your dance background, if you have never studied flamenco, this is the way to begin», explains Dionisia García in her website.

As can be expected, all guidelines regarding health, safety, and occupancy in times of Covid -19 have all been followed. They have worked hard to create the appropriate environment in their brand-new location.

On-line streaming will also be available for those not comfortable with in-person classes, with lessons being transmitted simultaneously via Zoom, so students can work virtually on all exercises.
