The dancer from Arcense gives a master class in grace and rhythm at the Jerez Festival with his show 'Tierra virgen', a song to the ancestral and the earthy.
There are those who dance on a tile and have room to spare, and those who are able to fill an entire stage with their dance. Flowers Frame, assisted by three singers and a guitarist in his new show, Wild, knows that he belongs to the second. You have to dance a lot, yes, to fill the stage of the Villamarta Theatre of grace, of pellizco and feeling.
At the beginning of the production, Marco Flores and his team recreate the peasant imaginary with minimal means. A harvest song from Burgos is played, followed by a medley of Arcos mule drivers, carceleras, cantes of the weeding and that other cante of the Palace that tells us about Rodrigo Martinez, the one who whistled to the geese thinking they were cows. It is enough to immerse us in that world of ancestral sounds and telluric forces. And to raise the first ovation.
The dancer emulates a mare or a mule, and soon the ropes that want to tame him fall upon him. The shadow of gades y Mario Maya fleetingly hovers over the stage, but it is only for an instant. The man from Arcense wants to explore a vast territory of the musical heritage from which he comes, from which we all come, and he delves into the cuplé and the bolero. An impetuous Cello Pantoja attack Shame, shame, shame in the land of Lola Flores, which is also his, and the theatre collapses again.
«The journey between the festive and the liturgical ends there, but after having been accompanied by a display of rhythm and art that once again sets the bar high for the irregular programming of Jerez. And it shows that this company is simple and joyfully indomitable»

It's time to calm down a bit, and the guajira, daughter of the Cuban punto, seems like a good option. The unmistakable flute of the sharpener announces the entrance on the scene of a singular peacock, which is none other –of course– than Marco Flores in his most relaxed and playful version, ready to embroider that palo “de chifla y vuelta” brandishing a fan with a trail of gauze. A beautiful dance in which we see her incorporate elements of tap dancing and old Hollywood musicals without losing her flamenco style.
The good humor is maintained in the number of the pen and the reed whistle that gives way to new musical references from the past, from The violet-sellers al Smoking I wait, and between seriousness and jokes ("You have to go to the gym!" Chelo tells Flores) we arrive at that superb soleá caracolera that ends up shaking the audience. Everything has seemed like a very free repertoire, a succession of cantes without apparent vertebrae, but the route traced is clear: A whole sentimental memory, a soundtrack of centuries that the dancer and his people do not resign themselves to forget., but they do not want them in a fossil state either. Thus, as we pointed out at the beginning, a stage is filled: invoking those who came before and allowing them to continue illuminating the path.
That includes ending up doing a rescue of Canarian folklore like The dance of the living with a finale in bulerías (and what bulerías) as well as a Latin American classic like the Questions about God de Atahualpa YupanquiThe journey between the festive and the liturgical ends there, but after having been accompanied by a display of rhythm and art that once again sets the bar high for the irregular programme in Jerez. And it shows, in case anyone wanted to give Marco Flores and his band a helping hand, that this company is simple and joyfully indomitable.
