The cast was made up of eleven young people between 16 and 21 years old, heirs of the flamenco heritage of important lineages of Jerez de la Frontera, a handful of kids who make up part of the cantefrom the neighborhoods of Santiago and San Miguel. They carry the surnames as a guarantee rubichi, Agujetas, Morao, Copse, Valencia, Patched, Montoya, Junquera, Pantoja, Jimenez or belong to the family of The PipaAnd they are called to the future of Jerez in the 21st century to slowly forge their deep personalities.
The Sala Compañía hosted the programming of the Jerez Festival the recital of a passionate flamenco youth with an illusion. Under the name of Children of the compass, the singers gathered on the stage Bernardo Rubichi, Manuel Junquera y Luis Montoya Chanquita, with the guitars of Manuel Rubichi, Antonio Morao y work carrasco son, adorned with the dance of Antonio El Pipa Jr y Manuela's Choir. The bells rang palmas de London Curro y Curro of Remendao and the percussion of Juan Diego Valencia.
I take out the cape with veterans and children without being deceitful. Although it was not a perfect performance, some of them have the potential and I know they do it better. They did not have a good day. However, they gave their all with enthusiasm and passion, giving it their all, wanting to step on the boards with right.
Bernardo began under the zenith with the romance of Gentlemen and good men squeezing her throat of broken metal. Coral de la Manuela gave her first brushstroke of dancing in the light with a cane. Luis gave a brave Cartagena dancer a hard time. El del Pipa presented some classic steps, walks and poses. A little green, as is normal at this age. Manuel played a fandangazo recalling the airs of Manuel Torre y Agujetas -Life was coming to an end for the woman I loved most.–. The guitars come out a little out of tune for the alegrías and bulerías of Cádiz. Coral danced more than decently, with gypsy spirit and rhythm.
The next transition left two empty chairs airing for a while in the centre of the proscenium with no one occupying them, to the bewilderment of the audience. The Rubichi brothers played, seeking coordination for the cante Bernardo's performance while the microphones remained open and conversations and firecrackers could be heard. The throats remained semi-toned for most of the performance, leading to a number that was at least average.
«The Hijos del Compás still have a lot to prove. Experience, study, life experiences and talent will put each one where they belong, knowing from the start that they have enough material to make the basket. Regardless of the surnames, which contribute nothing if there is no perseverance and talent. Whether they are from Jerez, Cádiz, Utrera, Triana or Lebrija»
Curro accompanied Luis's tientos tangos as best he could. Junquera and Morao got bolder with seguiriyas where Manuel wore out his voice, already worn out when he got to the macho who bears his name, who finished with great difficulty. Morao was able to defend himself with the sonanta. The three guitars blended well in the bulería pa esquichá. Antonio danced with great skill. The singers alternated some lyrics for tangos, then for bulerías and the dancers returned to the stage to close a recital that seemed long. It was scheduled for 70 minutes and lasted an hour and a half.
The sound was poor and poorly equalized, covering the palmas the instrumentation and the voices, as well as not muting microphones at the right time or paying attention to the volume to avoid saturations and bangs. This did little to help the artists' ears, whose throats struggled with the tuning.
And despite everything, there were glimpses of talent in Bernardo's singing skills, whom I have heard with much better success on other occasions, exuding poise with an extraordinary echo. I trust in the progression of Morao's guitar and the cante Luis. I would say that if Junquera took care of his nerves and his voice, there is also a career in his throat. Coral needs the polish of years and experience, it is clear. The rest of the guitarists are still in the first bumps of the road. palmeros They have a good future and the percussion from Valencia was really good, very professional, playing with the times and beats, the dynamics, the different postures and the rhythmic cadences.
I predict better times for them. There is no offensive jab, but rather a wake-up call that goes straight to the point. The 'Hijos del Compás' still have a lot to prove. Experience, study, experiences and talent will put each one where they belong, knowing from the start that they have the necessary tools to make the basket. Regardless of the surnames, which contribute nothing if there is no perseverance and talent. Whether they are from Jerez, Cádiz, Utrera, Triana or Lebrija..
